TADHack Global 2017 Singapore Just Around The Corner
We’re Counting Down To TADHack Global 2017 Singapore!
Yes, it’s getting real. The TADHack Global 2017 Singapore banner sits in my office, reminding me that this awesome event kicks off in just a few days. For some locations around the world, it starts on 22 September 2017. We’re still getting ready. We’ll probably be “just about” prepared when the first of the event locations goes live on Friday. A week later, Temasys hosts TADHack Global 2017 Singapore.
Why We Do TADHack?
TADHack is a unique event. It specifically highlights telecommunications technologies, which by itself is not terribly interesting for many developers. What is great about TADHack is the emphasis on using these technologies in new and interesting ways. That’s certainly what makes TADHack so much fun.
To see what I mean, check out our blog post about the March 2017 TADHack Mini in Orlando, Florida. A huge number of ideas and projects that have taken root or been produced at TADHack over the years. There are tons of new ideas that get surfaced for hacks, every year. Check out this list for some hacks that have been suggested for this year.
And Now, A Word From Our Sponsors…
Someone recently asked me why Temasys supports TADHack when there are so many other companies involved. “Why we don’t just run our own events 100% of the time?” These are good questions.
It’s true. There are a lot of companies sponsoring and supporting TADHack this year. One look at the pull-up banner for the event tells us as much. In some ways, it’s an interesting view of the telecom application toolkit ecosystem. However, what I find really cool is that each of the companies represented at TADHack Global is unique, and we are not (always) competing against each other in terms of products.
My view is that TADHack helps sponsors reach a pretty large audience that we might not otherwise be able to get in front of, on our own. Or at least, not without a significant effort. Yes, I’d love to set up and run a hackathon in all of the 24+ cities where there will be physical locations for TADHack this year. Someday I hope we can do just that. Today it’s kind of difficult since there are nearly more TADHack locations than we have employees!
Putting all of us on the board together lets participants in TADHack gain access to and learn about a variety of tools and technologies that they would never otherwise see all in one place. Most sponsors provide content, training, and support to participants, remotely. The nice thing is that there is a whole community of like-minded companies and individuals staffing each location and supporting the other sponsors there, all helping each other be part of something bigger than we could each manage on our own.In this way, it’s a great experience for participants in the event.
TADHack is also another way to get great feedback about our product. We love to see how well we are doing in terms of making it easy for developers of any skill level to use our SDKs and to build cool apps with embedded real-time communication features. It’s also a lot of fun to help participants implement their ideas and see the different ways they envision using Temasys and our APIs and SDKs.
Who Goes To TADHack Events?
Let’s face it: If you’re the least bit introverted, it’s often scary and awkward to walk into rooms full of strangers, make fast friends, form teams, learn about and/or dive into using new programming tools and create awesome applications from scratch… all in less than two days.
TADHack organizers go to great lengths to alleviate these pain points. This is not a cutthroat event like BattleBots. It’s not a “Winner Take All” kind of thing. Although there are some really great prizes, TADHack’s motto is “Learn, Share, Code, Create”. As a result, we encourage people to join our events no matter what their skill levels are. Participants come from all kinds of backgrounds and have a huge variety of experience. For many, TADHack is their first hackathon, and we try to make it as easy and fun an experience as can be.
Some participants will arrive with fully formed projects in mind, and some have years of experience working with telecommunications technologies, or writing software. I enjoy watching them discover new ways to apply their skills. What’s more powerful than that is seeing many of them mentor and coach less experienced participants.
This is something I believe is unusual and something that makes TADHack very special.
What To Watch Out For This Year
Here in Singapore, Temasys is working with SpaceMob to host TADHack Global 2017 Singapore at their Claymore Hill location. Our “local” event officially runs on the 30th September and 1st of October. If you haven’t stopped by yet, SpaceMob is an awesome coworking space. The Claymore Hill venue is just a few minutes walk from the Orchard MRT station.
Throughout the event, there will be videos and live streams from other locations. Some of the cool things we’re looking forward to:
- Sponsored Challenge: The Arcfire RINA Rumba Challenge intends to highlight the use of any of the global sponsors’ technologies running over a RINA network. Learn more about that, here. What this means is that participants have more opportunities to earn prizes by working on this specific problem. There are also lots of other ideas for what to hack on. You can see those over at the TADHack blog.
- Pitches! Participants will all have the chance to tell the rest of the world about their hacks. All pitches will be live streamed and recorded at each location. Want to know what that looks like? Check out the winners from TADHack Global 2016!
What’s In It For Me?
Well, for starters there is some US$45,000 worth of cash prizes up for grabs, in total. Aside from the opportunity to get ahold of next month’s rent (or part of it, anyway), participants also have the chance to meet new people, learn new things, and have some good clean fun. There will be local prizes, t-shirts and other swag around, and in Singapore, we’re making sure that no one will leave our event hungry!
Where Do I Sign Up?
