Don’t Underestimate the Power of Your Internet Browser

I recently spoke with an associate who was looking to buy a new video conferencing platform for her enterprise. She had her eye on a few different solutions like Skype for Business, RingCentral, Zoom, Amazon’s Chime and GoToMeeting, and she wanted my opinion about which would be the best fit.
Here are my thoughts on the matter:
You don’t have to sign an expensive, and exclusive, contract to obtain audio or video conferencing for your enterprise. There is a technology that powers many of today’s solutions which is more flexible and affordable, called Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC). It’s an open source set of application programming interfaces (APIs) and audio/ video codecs.
So, what makes WebRTC so great? This tech can be built directly into a website or application — meaning employees and customers alike can use WebRTC to exchange real-time video, audio, and even data without having to download any software.
Many leading browsers that you already use to surf the Web, like Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, now support WebRTC. And for browsers that don’t fully support WebRTC, such as Internet Explorer and Safari, plugins are available.
The New Best Tool for Video Conferencing: Internet Browsers?
My friend was somewhat surprised to learn this. She also admitted that she didn’t think Internet browsers were so advanced. The truth, though, is that Internet browsers have advanced quite a bit since the first WorldWideWeb browser from Mozilla was released back in 1990. Change may happen slowly in the browser space, but it’s still happening.
One other question came up: Is it tough to build and manage a WebRTC platform?
The answer is yes. And this is probably a good topic for several other posts. But that’s where WebRTC platform as a service (PaaS) providers like Temasys Communications come into play. You can consult with a PaaS provider to build a WebRTC service and embed real-time communications capability directly into your digital channels — ensuring you receive a high-quality solution.
